Stiles’ NDP will help Peterborough families fight rising costs

TORONTO – Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles spoke with families and supporters about how the NDP will fight the rising cost of living at her campaign stop in Peterborough today. She was joined by the NDP’s strong Peterborough team Jen Deck (Peterborough-Kawarthas) and Bruce LePage (Northumberland—Peterborough South).

“Families in Peterborough need a government on their side. After seven long years of Doug Ford, the cost of rent in Peterborough is up thirty per cent, more and more people are being treated in hospital hallways, and grocery bills are more expensive than ever.

Peterborough deserves much better.

As Premier, I will fight against rising costs to help families get ahead. Our Monthly Grocery Rebate will put money back in people’s pockets. And our Family Health Guarantee will see more doctors hired for Peterborough and end hallway healthcare once and for all.”

The Ontario NDP’s platform will help fight rising costs in Peterborough:

• Monthly Grocery Rebate that is based on how much the cost of essential groceries like milk, bread and vegetables have increased under Ford.
• Bringing in real rent control that closes loopholes and helps people stay in their homes.
• Better health care: We’ll connect the 28,066 people in Peterborough who lack a family doctor to the care they need.
• Fix schools: We’ll address the $267 million school repair backlog.

Background: Ford has left Peterborough behind

• There are 14,133 people using Food Banks in Peterborough, up to 34% are children
• Rent has gone up more than 30% in Peterborough under Ford (since 2018)
• There are 28,066 people without access to a doctor in Peterborough.
• Daily, on average, 12 people are treated in hallways at Campbellford Memorial Hospital daily and 31 people are treated in hallways at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
• Peterborough schools need $267 million in school repairs
