Statement from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath marking the start of Islamic Heritage Month

QUEEN’S PARK — NDP Official Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath released the following statement to mark International Workers’ Day and First Responders Day in Ontario:

As-Salamu Alaykum,

It is with great pleasure that I join the Muslim community in commemorating Islamic Heritage Month this October. This month offers Ontarians the opportunity to celebrate, to educate, and to reflect on Islam’s rich history, its longstanding traditions, and the cultural diversity of the Muslim community.

Through their outstanding efforts and contributions to fields including the arts, history, science, and literature, Muslim Ontarians continue to enrich the social, economic, cultural, and political fabric of our province.

Throughout the month of October, the Ontario NDP Caucus invites you to celebrate the heritage of Ontario’s Muslim community, and to take part in the many virtual events and activities that are taking place across the province.

Let us recommit to standing together against Islamophobia and systemic racism in Ontario, and to building a province in which we all deserve to live. Together, let us honour the Ontarians who make this province a beautiful and dynamic one!

On behalf of the Ontario NDP Caucus, we wish you a joyous and inspiring Islamic Heritage Month!
