Today, Ontario’s New Democrats proudly supported MPP Harinder Malhi’s motion calling on the legislature to recognize the 1984 Sikh Genocide in India.
Today's motion passed, despite several of Wynne’s Liberal MPPs voting against it. The Liberal government previously opposition a similar motion to recognize the 1984 Sikh Genocide, introduced by NDP Deputy Leader Jagmeet Singh in June 2016.
'Today’s motion is a result of the Sikh community’s unified resiliency in refusing to let this government remain silent,' said Singh, who was joined by NDP Leader Andrea Horwath during the debate on the motion.
Singh said the targeted killing of Sikhs throughout India in June, 1984 deserves an unequivocal condemnation by Ontario, and the Sikh community deserves allies at Queen's Park during their healing process.
“Acknowledging injustice is a precondition for healing and reconciliation to take place,' said Singh. 'Ontario has a proud history of recognizing genocide and injustice in solidarity with communities from all corners of the world. Although the Wynne Liberals have been inconsistent in that support, New Democrats are pleased to be a part of a small, positive movement today, extending solidarity to the Sikh community.”
