QUEEN'S PARK – Official Opposition Leader Marit Stiles and NDP MPP France Gélinas joined countless families and advocates at Queen's Park today as Ford's Conservatives finally moved to declare Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) an epidemic through NDP legislation:
"After years of resisting the call, I'm pleased this government has finally decided to do the right thing and officially recognize victims of intimate partner violence," said Stiles.
"This is a significant victory for IPV survivors and each family torn apart by it. However, let's be crystal clear—this is just the first step. Awareness without action will achieve nothing. The conservatives must restore funding to the victim compensation fund and ensure our courts are properly staffed so victims receive justice."
"We've known for far too long that intimate partner violence is a pervasive issue, especially in Northern Ontario. Intimate partner violence doesn't discriminate; it affects everyone regardless of gender," said Gélinas.
"It's time to stop talking and start acting. Not only must we declare this an epidemic, but we also need to implement measures to protect victims and save lives. This is only the first step - the government won't be off the hook.”
