On Thursday, Toronto Danforth NDP MPP Peter Tabuns introduced legislation to designate June as Filipino Heritage Month in Ontario.
“Filipino-Canadians are one of the fastest-growing segments of our population, in my community and throughout the province,” said Tabuns. “Filipino-Canadians have made lasting contributions socially, politically, economically and culturally. Filipino heritage month is an important way to acknowledge these contributions, and for all Ontarians to learn more and share in Filipino culture.”
The City of Toronto was the first government in Canada to officially create a heritage month for Filipinos, after Scarborough-Rouge River Councillor Neethan Shan passed a motion designating June as Filipino Heritage Month. The month of June coincides with the Philippines Independence and holds special significance for the 700,000 Filipino-Canadians living throughout Canada.
“I'm asking all members of the legislature to join New Democrats in recognizing and celebrating the many contributions of Filipino-Canadians, who have helped make Ontario the wonderful place it is today," said Tabuns. "My motion will designate June as Filipino Heritage Month in Ontario, each year, beginning in June 2018.”
