NDP calls Ford’s flip-flop on electric vehicles late, weak and incomplete

QUEEN’S PARK — Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls), the Official Opposition NDP critic for Auto Strategy, released the following statement in response to Premier Doug Ford’s press conference on electric vehicles:

“Doug Ford’s sudden flip-flop on electric vehicles is late, weak and badly incomplete. He still refuses to have electric vehicle incentives or rebates, and refuses to commit to putting back the charging stations he took away.

Doug Ford literally had electric vehicle charging stations ripped out of the ground. He cancelled incentives for people to buy electric cars. He refused to try to save Oshawa’s GM jobs, saying ‘They’re gone. They’re done,” – and the workers proved him wrong. He was more interested in cutting than in attracting auto jobs and building up Ontario into an electric vehicle leader.

The Liberals had 15 years. Katheen Wynne and Steven Del Duca didn’t deliver an electric auto strategy when they had the chance, either.

With the NDP, there’s hope. We’ve already released our commitment to Ontario’s first-ever zero emissions vehicles strategy, and it includes rebates for families, charging stations at home and on the road and so much more. With the NDP, every new vehicle sold will be electric by 2035, and we’ll protect and create hundreds of thousands of jobs.”
