Leader of the Official Opposition issues statement on Federal Election Results

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition NDP, has issued the following statement about the results of the federal election:

"I want to extend my sincere congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The task ahead is a big one – to unite our country, stand up against Donald Trump, and defend our economy and workers. The people of Canada have put their trust in you to lead us through an unprecedented challenge, and it is my hope that you stand up for the values that makes Canada what it is – the best country in the world.

"Now more than ever we need a strong federal partner that delivers reassurance, relief and results for the people of Ontario. As the Official Opposition of Canada’s largest province, we are calling on the Prime Minister to:

  • Take urgent action to protect jobs in auto, steel and forestry, while expanding EI to make sure workers are protected from the whiplash of Trump's reckless tariffs
  • Follow through on the commitment to get the government back in the business of building homes, as the Ontario NDP has put forward with our Homes Ontario plan, so we can double the supply of affordable, non-market and non-profit homes here in Ontario
  • Immediately sign a new deal to protect $10 a day child care in Ontario, so families are not stuck making difficult choices in the face of economic challenges

As workers and families across Ontario face growing uncertainty – from Trump’s tariffs to threats to our sovereignty – we must stand united to strengthen Ontario. To look after people, get Ontario building, and grow our economy.

I want to thank Jagmeet Singh for his years of leadership and service. He led with courage and conviction and delivered results in the last Parliament that will make life better for millions of Canadians for years to come.

This was a tough election, and Canada’s NDP has lost dedicated and principled MPs. Now is the time to reflect on what we’ve learned, and how we can build a stronger movement that can change lives.

To every NDP candidate, staff, and volunteer who gave their all in this election – thank you. New Democrats are not going anywhere. Your dedication, heart, and belief in a better Canada will carry us forward."
