SUDBURY—France Gélinas, Ontario NDP's Official Opposition Health Critic, is standing in solidarity with OCHU and CUPE after their recent report exposed the deplorable working conditions and abuse healthcare workers endure across Ontario.
"Nurses are walking into work not knowing how many patients they'll be responsible for, and the constant strain is taking a heavy toll on workers and patients," said Gélinas. "It's not fair for our workers to be treated like this, and it's affecting the quality of care that Ontarians receive. Nurses deserve a safe workload and better treatment by this government, but that hasn't been the case."
Gélinas stressed that the solution is clear: Nurses-to-patients ratios for better care and improved staff morale. "Patients will continue to suffer unless this government finally acknowledges the good that the Patient-to-Nurse Ratios for Hospitals Act, 2024, could bring.
As elected officials, it is our job to find solutions to the problems of Ontarians," Gélinas continued. "The nurse-to-patients ratio was a solution, and this government said no. Now, months later, more and more reports are coming out. Why are we wasting time? This government needs to act today."
