NIAGARA FALLS — Wayne Gates, Ontario NDP critic for the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), responded to the Ford government launching a review of the WSIB with the following statement:
“Injured workers have suffered for decades under a WSIB that failed to properly compensate workers who were injured on the job. Within months of taking office, Doug Ford made a bad situation worse, slashing employer contributions by 30 per cent and delivering a kick in the teeth to injured workers who are struggling following serious injuries on the job.
It’s already clear that this review will not lead to improvements for injured workers. The Ford government has admitted that it could open the door to privatization and cuts, a move that will further disadvantage workers injured or made ill on the job. It is concerning that the government wants to mimic practices of the private insurance sector when to comes to protecting injured workers in the province.
Ontario workers deserve a government that protects their benefits and supports their rights, not one intent on clawing back the compensation they are rightfully owed.”
