TREATY 3 TERRITORY - Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong), Official Opposition NDP critic for Indigenous and Treaty Relations and Northern Development, issued the following statement as Cat Lake First Nation provided a response opposing the Ford Conservatives’ unilateral mining exploration permits in their Territory:
“Enough is enough. Let's be crystal clear - First Nations have an indisputable right to self-determination and the fundamental principle of free, prior, and informed consent. This includes how lands and waters are maintained to sustain the lands for future generations.
Ford’s Conservatives can’t plead ignorance. First Nations, and Cat Lake specifically, have tirelessly reminded this government of their duty to consult. I again state that the project will not proceed without the free, prior and informed consent of First Nations.
Meaningful consent is not a request - it's a demand and a must to protect the resources of the North.
Premier Ford, it's time you listen. When the Legislature reconvenes, we will raise this issue and hold your government accountable for its role in this injustice.”
