QUEEN’S PARK – Official Opposition NDP Housing Critic Jessica Bell (University – Rosedale) called on Ford Conservatives to bring back real rent control following today’s announcement to remove the HST on new rental development.
“Making it easier to build purpose-built rentals is essential,” said Bell in response to the removal of HST on new rental development. “However, without real rent control, the rents in these new homes could see double-digit increases each year.”
Ontario NDP continues to advocate for solutions as Ontarians face a worsening housing and affordability crisis. Bell has introduced legislation calling to protect renters from illegal evictions and establish a short-term rental registry. Bell, joined by NDP MPPs Jill Andrew (Toronto – St. Paul’s). Bhutila Karpoche (Parkdale – High Park), and Chris Glover (Spadina – Fort York) has also introduced legislation to bring back real rent control.
Five years ago, the Ford government removed all rent control protections from new rental units first occupied after November 2018.
