It's time to unlock our roads by ending the sky-high 407 tolls for truckers

Marit Stiles has a plan

THE ISSUE

In Ontario, the lifeblood of our economy and communities — our truckers — face an uphill battle against sky-high tolls on Highway 407, making it an underused route while Highway 401 remains congested. It's a situation that demands immediate action, not just for truckers but for all Ontarians who rely on the efficient movement of goods and services.

The issue at hand is clear: Highway 407's exorbitant tolls deter truckers, leading to underutilization of a vital transport artery. This, in turn, forces heavy traffic onto Highway 401, exacerbating congestion and delaying deliveries. It’s a cycle that hurts our economy, impacts our communities, and inflates costs for everyone.

MARIT STILES' PLAN

Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP are spearheading a movement to end the tolls on Highway 407 for truckers. Our plan? To transform this underutilized route into a free-flowing highway that benefits truckers and drivers alike, ensuring goods can move more efficiently across our province. It's a policy crafted not only with practicality in mind but with a firm belief in fairness and accessibility for all.

Yet, the current government under Doug Ford's Conservatives has shown a consistent failure to address this critical issue. By ignoring the potential of Highway 407 and waiving penalties against its operators for failing to maintain minimum traffic flow, they've chosen corporate interests over the public good. Their refusal to negotiate lower tolls or consider toll removal has left truckers, and by extension, all Ontarians, paying the price.

The Liberals, under Bonnie Crombie, offer no solace. Their past promises to reduce tolls have fallen flat, with years in power marked by inaction and allowing private operators to impose steep tolls unchecked. The pattern of promising change without follow-through tells us we cannot rely on them to fix this issue.

The Ontario NDP, guided by the insights of transportation experts, stakeholder feedback, and the clear need for change, proposes a bold step forward: end the tolls on Highway 407. This isn't just about easing traffic; it's a commitment to improving our collective quality of life, supporting our truckers, and ensuring our roads serve the needs of the many, not the few.
